You haven't experienced Cape Malay in its entirety until you've been to the Bo-kaap Kombuis. The Bo-Kaap is an area of Cape Town that has traditionally been occupied by the Cape Malay community, descendants of the Malay slaves brought to the Cape by the Dutch East India company. The area is noticeable by the colourful colours of the homes and the rich aromas that fill the streets as they escape the kitchens of the homes in the area.
The Bo-Kaap kombuis is no exception and the food is exceptional. The Cape Curries are world famous. You wont find a Korma or a Vindaloo here. What you will find are carefully crafted fragrant and aromatic tastes that take your tastebuds to heaven and back. More than sufficient kick for you to know that its a curry that you are eating and yet subtle leaving an aftertaste that soesnt burn.
It is obvious that the creations you'll find in theses kitchens are recipes that have been passed down the generations and the adaptation to the availability of ingredients and circumstances of this population group has led to a unique taste that has you coming back for more.
Remember this community is predominantly Muslim so you wont be served alcohol in the either the Bo-Kaap kombuis or most of the surrounding eateries and definitely please don't offend by bringing your own bottle.
Insist on a seat by the long Windows on the far side of the restaurant. On a Sunny day the view is spectacular. On a cloudy day the view is spectacular, what more can I say.
Suggestions:
The Butter Chicken or the Bobotie are old favourites and the taste will make you want to make them yourself when you get back home.
