Most Friday mornings, except when he's out of town, or unwell, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu St Georges Cathedral on Wale Street in Central Cape Town.leads the Friday Morning Eucharist service at
This iconic man, a stalwart from the Apartheid struggle; remains an outspoken critic against injustice, corruption and bad elements of the day. However Friday morning Eucharist is an experience not to be forgotten. Although the Arch is ageing, he has not lost his sense of humour, welcomes visitors individually and has recollections of his visitors from all over the world.
visitors are invited to take Photos with him after the service and the opportunity to chat to him is relinquished by few.
When visiting the Cathedral it would be considerate to make a donation as the Cathedral desperately needs a new roof and the monthly costs to run it are exhorbitant. As a symbol of the struggle against Apartheid in the centre of white rule, it would be rather tragic for this precious place of safety to crumble due to indifference.
The Cathedral boasts a rather magnificent ebony Madonna and has historic memorial plaques all over. A rather excellent feature for any visit is the labyrinth walk that can be found in the cloisters between the Cathedral and the Dean King Hall. The cloisters make a wonderfully peaceful place to sit and take in the quiet, while the bustling city carries on in the background.
This iconic city sight is en route to many other sights, is included in the stop of the city sightseeing bus and is well worth the visit followed by a visit to one of the coffee houses or Cafes along St Georges mall across the road to the South of the building.
